WHICH WALL TO PAINT? - a question which people ask me quite often.
Well, to answer this question it’s worth first understand why you want to paint one wall and not to paint one wall just for the sake of painting.
So there can be several reasons to consider painting one wall in a different color.
1. To create an accent/focal wall. Rooms without an architectural feature can benefit from an accent wall, especially one with texture or thematic drawing. To choose the right wall take into account the layout and proportions of your room. For example, an accent wall can be a background for sofa or armchairs group in the living room, for a dining group in the dining room, for a bed in bedroom, etc.
2. To create an architectural grid by adding an active vertical element. This can help balance the horizontal and vertical filling of the space.
3. To correct the room proportions. With painting walls in different colors you can make a narrow room look wider, stretch, expand or shorten the space, make too-high ceiling look lower, etc. (Scroll the images to see the scheme).
To attract attention to an accent wall go with a color that is darker than the other walls in the room. A darker hue will contrast with the lighter walls and pull eyes straight to it. A good rule of thumb is to paint the accent wall the same color as the other walls, but 2 shades darker.
Paint walls opposite windows a cool, dark color to absorb light in too-bright rooms. If you want a brighter room, paint a dark color on the window wall with lighter colors opposite to reflect light back into the room.
Take into account the color on your other walls. Most accent walls look best when they adjoin walls in a light to medium shade. Accent walls in an all-white room are tricky. Balance your strong accent wall color with neutral wall colors on the other walls. Your neutral walls can be gray, or greige, or beige, whatever works best with your accent color. If you do choose to accent a wall in a white room, soften the contrast with mid-tone accent colors to bridge the difference.
